John 8:36 reads, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
To read only this verse, would be a mistake. It would lead us not to understand what Jesus is saying.
I encourage you to read the related verses, John 8: 31 through 36.
If you discussed the current political environment, the destruction of property, the feeling of our liberties taken away, people would understand you.
But speak to them as Jesus did, about the bondage of sin and captivity to that sin. And about the liberty that Jesus Christ offers. Speak about their soul in jeopardy, and most would have a hard time understanding.
Jesus spoke to this group, reminding them that anyone who practices sin was a slave to that sin.
Jesus Christ offers us freedom from the slavery of sin. He has the authority to do this. As John 8:36 tells us, “if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
It should disturb every believer in Jesus as Savior of their life, as their chain breaker of the sin in their life to see persons disputing about liberty of every imagination. But at the same time, they are slaves to sin in their life.
Jesus spoke of spiritual liberty. The only way that can happen is “if” you invite Jesus into your life as Lord and Savior.
