Citizens of Heaven

What country or kingdom are you a citizen of? You might say, “I’m an American citizen. I am a citizen of Canada. I’m a citizen of Nigeria.” In some cases, you might even have dual citizenship where you are a citizen of two countries at the same time. We identify our citizenship with the country where we were born or naturalized. It means you legally belong to that country and you have the rights and protection of that country. It also means that you adopt the behaviors, culture and values of that country.

We all have dual citizenship, but it has nothing to do with where you were physically born. We're born into this earthly world and are subject to and influenced by it. Unfortunately, it is a kingdom ruled by Satan, and we grow up adopting his culture unless and until we find Jesus. Through His death on the Cross and His resurrection, He extends to us an invitation to be born into His Kingdom of heaven. It is a spiritual rebirth of the heart. We are then set free and become citizens of heaven, an eternal Kingdom.

That gives us the great benefit of exiting the flawed values and behaviors of this world, and living for eternity. This is so important to understand. If you’ve received the salvation of Jesus, you adopt and live by new values, behaviors and culture. You spiritually belong to the Lord. You have all rights and protection of His Kingdom: all His promises, all His love. Dual citizenship is walking in the Spirit.

It’s time to rejoice and lift up the name of Jesus, again! We may be in this world, but we are not of this world. We are citizens of an eternal Kingdom now. Our rights go beyond what is on this earth. We have power that is beyond anything the enemy may have. We are children of the King. Jesus left us hope and told us to be ambassadors of His Kingdom to give His hope to others in the world. As citizens of Heaven, while we’re on earth, walk like, talk like, live like you are a citizen of Heaven.

“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.” Ephesians 2:1-5

Prayer

Jesus,
I thank You and rejoice because I am a citizen of heaven! I am a citizen of heaven because of You. I rejoice to know that I have all the benefits, protection and rights of heaven because I am a citizen. Hallelujah! Praise Your Holy Name! I rejoice for today is a day I remember that I am a citizen of heaven! Amen!
