What Our Hearts Desire
We are walking into the Love Weekend! For those of you who may need a reminder, Valentine’s Day is Sunday. How appropriate that we would talk about love on the very day we celebrate Jesus.
There are so many stories in the Bible about God’s love and the love of Jesus. I like to think of the Bible as God’s love letter to us because it is filled with His declarations of love for us and the extent He is willing to go to show us that love. The New Testament is filled with powerful descriptions of Jesus’ love for the lost and His ultimate sacrifice for all of us He made on the cross.
The truth is, God built us to love and be loved. In fact, we have an inner desire to be loved that causes us to search for it unceasingly. We are wired to seek His love, but often we find ourselves seeking the wrong love in all the wrong places. That inner desire for love will keep us searching until that desire is fulfilled. And we can find ourselves looking for love in things, people, fame, whatever we think can fill that hunger.
Unfortunately, earthly things do not satisfy the desires of our heart. Those things can and will fail us because they are fleeting moments guaranteed to disappoint eventually. What our hearts desire is true, unchanging love. Love that accepts us for who we are with no judgment. Love that forgives and is delighted with us.
The answer to our greatest psychological, emotional and spiritual need is unfailing, reckless and unconditional love. That kind of love can only come from Jesus. It is the only kind of love that fulfills and brings the sweet quietness of peace to our souls. And it is free! There is no price charged for it and there is nothing we need to do to gain or earn it.
This love forgives and forgets and is filled with promises that will never be broken. This love fills the empty places in our hearts and completely satisfies. God’s love calls us and eagerly waits for an answer. Is your heart open to receive His love and make Him the center of your heart’s desire? Reach out and open your heart to Him. Let Him come and fill you to overflowing as only He can. On Valentine’s Day, do something different. Pledge your love for Him and let Him pour out His love on you.
“What a person desires is unfailing love.” Proverbs 19:22
“The Lord delights in those who fear Him, who put their hope in His unfailing love.” Psalm 147:11
“How priceless is Your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.” Psalm 36:7
Prayer
Lord,
At night my soul longs for You, indeed, my spirit within me seeks You diligently; for when the earth experiences Your judgments the inhabitants of the world learn righteousness. My soul languishes for Your salvation; I wait for Your word. Nothing else can satisfy my soul but Your living water and bread of life. I love You with all my heart, soul, mind and strength. I praise Your mighty name and raise a hallelujah! Amen!
