The Love of Yahweh!
Reading my one year Bible, I came across the story of Moses’ encounters with God on Mount Sinai when the Israelites were heading to the Promised Land. What is so beautiful about this story is to hear straight from the lips of the Lord how much He loves us, even when we don’t deserve it. This story reveals His heart toward His people.
Moses made two famous trips up Mount Sinai to meet with the Lord. On the first trip, he left Aaron in charge until he returned. Unfortunately, while he was gone, the people rebelled, thinking Moses wasn’t coming back. A frightened Aaron helped them create new gods to worship. Moses was so furious when he returned that he broke the tablets on which the Lord had written His commandments.
After things settled, Moses returned a second time to Mount Sinai to once again receive the commandments from the Lord. This is when the Lord revealed who He is and described His love for His people. In this conversation, we see the character of the Father and we hear Him profess His love for us. He details how seriously that love is to Him.
“The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, ‘Yahweh! The Lord! God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin.” Exodus 34:6-9
The Lord revealed who He is, Yahweh, the God of compassion and mercy toward us, slow to anger. Then twice He tells us about His love: it is unfailing! On top of that, He is faithful. He tells us that He will lavish this love on many generations, even as He forgives our iniquity, rebellion and sin. Can you see how great the love of God is toward us?
Moses was so moved by the Lord’s words that he immediately asked forgiveness for the Israelites’ iniquity and sin against God, and then asked Him to “Claim us as Your own special possession.” (verse 9) The Lord did. We are His special possession. In His reply to Moses, the Lord further revealed just how deep His love is and why we must worship only Him.
“You must worship no other gods, for the Lord, whose very name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about His relationship with you.” Exodus 34:14
There you have it! Our Father loves us so much that He wants nothing put before Him. Why? Because His relationship with us is so valuable to Him. We are His special possession and He wants nothing to interfere with that relationship. From the lips of the Lord to Moses and to all of us, we plainly hear the Lord say, “I love you and My relationship with you means everything to Me.” Rest in those words and let them heal and lift your soul. You are loved by the Almighty!
“We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name. Let Your unfailing love surround us Lord, for our hope is in You alone.” Psalm 33:20-22
Prayer
Jesus,
I wait in hope for You; You are my help and my shield. In You my heart rejoices, for I trust in Your holy name. May Your unfailing love be with me, Lord, even as I put our hope in You. Your Word is right and true; You are faithful in all You do. You love righteousness and justice; the earth is full of Your unfailing love. I will love You with all my heart, soul, mind and strength. Amen!
