Find Your Surfboard
Let’s go on an adventure. You will have to be brave and bold. You will have to overcome fear. You will have to be okay with getting wet. You will have to be daring. You will have to trust in someone other than yourself. You will have to be fine with taking a risk. And you must have courage. I found a surfboard in my garage and I’m going to help you find yours. Maybe you’ve never surfed before, but no worries. You will have help. Now let’s find your surfboard.
Surfing is riding waves toward the shore while either standing or lying flat on a surfboard. Waves move fast and their size depends upon the swell—how much the wind picks them up. Swells can be as tall as buildings. True surfers represent a diverse culture and have a spiritual connection and experience with surfing. We are on the ride of our lives as we become surfers. We’ll see the world differently as we ride the waves, but you must have the right surfboard.
Life is like riding waves in the ocean, large and small. We can be overcome by them or we can stand up and ride them out. What waves are you riding? Do you feel like you are barely holding on and you may drown? This pandemic is a wave of huge proportions. We don’t know how long this wave will last or whether we will tumble off our board while it runs. It’s hard to catch our breath between the swells of fear, unemployment, lack of finances, school shutdowns, racial tension, politics, too much!
We need a strong surfboard to stand on and a good teacher to teach us how to ride the waves and stay on our surfboard. Jesus is a great teacher and he knows about walking on water and how to ride the waves in a storm. He told the disciples that they too could walk on water and Peter even took Him up on it. In spite of the wind, the rain and the waves, in spite of the raging storm, in spite of his fear, Peter stepped out on hope and trust in Jesus. That is what we must do now and in the times to come.
Your surfboard is Hope in Jesus. If you trust Him, you can face any risk, any wave, any fear. You can be bold and courageous. You can get wet and not be afraid. You can face the swells and waves of life with determination and knowledge that you have the best teacher with you and the strongest surfboard ever, Hope. I dare you to take your surfboard and walk out on the waves with Jesus. I dare you to have faith and trust in Him alone. I dare you to ride the waves with conviction and no fear that you will fall or drown. You have provision. The waves may come, but none are too big, too challenging for our Lord. Ride with confidence. Let go and let Jesus be your guide.
“Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and He guided them to their desired destination. Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for men. Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders.”
Psalm 107:28-32
Prayer
Lord,
Just as deep calls to deep in the roar of Your waterfalls; all Your waves and breakers have swept over me. By day the You direct Your love, at night Your song is with me—I declare this prayer to the God of my life and the Lord of my hope. I will ride each and every wave with You. Amen!
