A Ten Dollar Blessing
We’ve talked about the many blessings the Lord has showered on us, but today I want to talk about the blessings we can shower on others. You may be thinking, “But I don’t have that much. I can hardly make it myself. How can I be a blessing to someone else?” Well, let me tell you how a simple act of kindness can turn into a blessing for someone. There is so much hope in the blessing process.
The other day, we went to the grocery store. It was just an ordinary day, nothing special about it. Oh, how it turned into a huge blessing. As we entered the store, we passed a homeless man just standing to the side. He didn’t ask us for anything and seemed lost in his thoughts. He had enough clothes on for the cold weather and carried a small duffle bag on his shoulders. With his hat pulled down, it was hard to even see his eyes.
After finishing our shopping, we got to the car and saw him standing near a bench in front of us. Another homeless man was there too. Neither said a word to us or to each other. The first man we saw was still in his thoughts. When we finished putting the groceries in the car, my husband said he had ten dollars and he wanted to give it to the homeless man. Because he does this often, I didn’t think much of it. What I didn’t know was that we were about to see how one blessing can lead to another.
My husband asked him if he was alright with him giving him money. His response was, “Bless you.” He didn’t look at the money and seemed so surprised by the gift, maybe because he hadn’t asked for anything. We sat in the car and watched. With a look of utter disbelief on his face, he sat on the bench, raised the ten dollar bill up to the sky. That’s when he realized it was ten dollars and he began to thank God for it.
You would have thought he had been given a million dollars. He leaned over and turned the money over and over, then lifted it back up to heaven. And then we watched him pray, I mean really pray! Tears flowed down my cheeks. This man had nothing, no place to sleep, no home, no money. Despite that, he took the time to praise the Lord right away for his blessing. It didn’t matter to him how small it may have been.
Your small act of kindness can be a true blessing to someone. In the process, you can give someone so much hope. We don’t know the homeless man’s circumstances, but we knew that ten dollars was an answer to prayer. He got blessed and gave thanks. We got blessed and we gave thanks. In just a matter of a few moments, hope sprung up for us all. God’s presence was in the moment.
Let’s all be more observant of others around us. We don’t know their struggles or their needs. Your smile or “How are you today?” could be just the blessing someone needs. Become one of the blessed to be a blessing and spread the hope of Jesus around.
“Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God.” Psalm 146:5
Prayer
Lord,
Praise be to You, my God my Savior, who daily bears my burdens. You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship You. You are my God; I will exalt you and praise Your name, for in perfect faithfulness You have done wonderful things, things planned long ago. I will give thanks to You, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all Your wonderful deeds. For, You are my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in You, and You help me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise You. Hallelujah. All glory and honor belongs to You Jesus! Amen!
