Just A Sip
Sometimes it’s the small things that mean so much. There’s a saying, “Small things come in big packages.” Well, think of your day as a big package. What small things bring you joy in your day? For me, it’s that first sip of coffee. I look forward to it as it flows over my taste buds and I get to savor the flavor. You know you can meet the day because of that first cup of coffee (or tea). All it took to start off on a good foot was that first sip.
Here’s another example. There’s an art to sipping wine. That first sip is to experience the wine. You swish the wine around in your mouth, like using mouthwash. This is so the wine touches all of your taste buds. As it lingers, you take a moment to think about the taste and how much you enjoy it. (Or at least that’s what the internet says!) Both of these examples happen in the natural world.
But what does sipping have to do with Jesus? Remember the story of Him and the disciples at the Last Supper? Jesus instituted what we call communion at that supper. This supper was so significant to HIm that He had the disciples prepare for it, right down to what room it would be in. He took His disciples to a deeper place in their relationship with Him, one He didn’t want them to forget and one that He wanted them to pass on.
Who knew the significance of that sip of wine and bread, and what hope it would bring? The disciples certainly didn’t get it at the moment. They didn’t see the meaning as it related to Jesus. After all, it was rather strange to hear the bread is His body and the wine is His blood. They had no idea about what was about to happen. They didn’t realize that they were getting a sip of Jesus that night which would sustain them and generations to come.
That sip represents the blood He shed on the cross. He wanted us to remember the sacrifice He made through His body and blood for our salvation. That sip brings freedom, forgiveness and grace each time all of us take communion. When we take communion, that sip of juice or wine is like taking a sip of Jesus’ love and mercy toward us.
Here’s the point. Each morning when we rise, we have an opportunity to commune with Jesus before our day starts. We can lean into Him through prayer, through worship, through conversation with Him or just through meditating on His Word. All we need is just a sip of Jesus to start our day. It will lift our spirits and give us the confidence and courage to face the day. That sip is sweet and we can savor that taste all day long. It will make us yearn for more.
Know that just a small sip of Him is all we need to sustain us, protect us and lead us through. And if we need more, He will overfill our cups so that we can commune with Him as often as we like. Make Him your first sip, first taste in the morning. He’s waiting for you.
“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.” Psalm 34:8
“Lord, You alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.” Psalm 16:5
Prayer
Lord,
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, my God. My soul thirsts for You, for the living God. Only You can satisfy my soul. You are my portion, Lord; I have promised to obey Your words. I have sought Your face with all my heart; be gracious to me according to Your promise. I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to Your statutes. I will hasten and not delay to obey Your commands. How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Thank You for sustaining me all the days of my life. Amen!
