Lord of the Leftovers
A woman was facing a very difficult time in her life and I’d like to tell you her story. She had a miraculous encounter with leftovers. Her story is unique because we learn the value of leftovers, especially when it comes to the Lord. Here’s her story.
She lived in the time before Christ, when her country was divided in two. She happened to live in the kingdom which was run by a king who ignored God. The nation was in turmoil, enemies of the nation were getting stronger, the economy was getting weaker and the nation’s leadership trusted more in their own wisdom than they did in God’s. As if this wasn’t enough, the nation found itself in the midst of a national crisis which adversely impacted families personally.(Sound familiar?)
This poor woman found herself in quite a dilemma. She married a man who was in the ministry and served as a prophet of God. In the middle of all the kingdom’s troubles, this man suddenly dies leaving her with debt and no real life insurance to speak of. He left his family in a bind. Not only did she have to deal with her husband’s death, but creditors were banging on her door demanding payment. Because of her age she couldn’t work so the creditors decided to take her sons and make them slaves until the debt was paid.
In tears, she went to Elisha and asked him to help her. All she had in her house was a small jar of olive oil. Elisha told her to go around and ask her neighbors for empty jars and don’t be shy about it. After she collected the jars, he told her to go home, close the door and keep her and her sons inside. Then she was to pour the oil into all the jars, and as each one filled up, put it aside.
She and her sons did just that and they filled those jars until there were none left. When all the jars were full, the oil stopped flowing. Elisha then sent her off to sell the oil and pay her debts. She even had enough oil left over to take care of her family. She had just encountered the miraculous Lord of the leftovers.
God can do so much with what we think is very little. All He needs from us is belief and trust that He can do the impossible. This woman had no idea what was going to happen when she locked herself and her sons in the house with that small jar of olive oil. She didn’t have enough to fill even one of the other jars. But she knew the God of Elisha was powerful. He had so much oil. Oil to overflowing. Not only did He keep filling the jars as her faith moved from jar to jar, but God rewarded that faith by giving her leftovers. Enough leftover oil to sustain her.
We serve that same God and He is still doing the miraculous. He can do the impossible in your life and fill you to overflowing. He can turn your situation around just like He did for this woman. All you must do is keep the faith, believe He can do it, and be obedient to His will. Watch Him fill your jars with love, peace, provision and more. He not only will meet your needs, but He will give you leftovers to let you know how much He loves you. He is the God of leftovers.
“Now this I know: the Lord gives victory to His anointed. He answers him from His heavenly sanctuary with the victorious power of HIs right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” Psalm 20:6-7
Prayer
Lord,
I will rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is Your will for me. I will gladly bring to You what I have. I trust You and know that You will take what I have and use it, not just for my benefit but for the blessing of others as well. I praise You and rejoice for the miracles coming my way. Amen!
