Fill Up Your Tank
When I first learned how to drive, my Dad told me it was best to keep the tank of the car full at all times. Being young, it didn’t make much sense to me to stop and put gas in the car when the tank was pretty full. I went back and forth to school and to my part-time job for days without checking the gauge. I had a false sense of security because all seemed good. Until one day, sitting at a red light, I looked down and the gauge was on “E”. No gas stations were around and I panicked. If only I had listened; I wouldn’t be in desperate times.
We too have a spiritual tank that needs to be full. That tank gives us strength and fuel to move through life, repel the enemy and maintain our connection with Jesus. It’s best to keep it filled up at all times so we’re prepared for whatever life throws at us. It’s so important to pay attention to our spiritual gauge. Neglecting to have a good handle on it will lead to a false sense of security, just like I had about my car. It’s rough when the gauge reaches empty and you have no strength to fight.
How full is your spiritual tank? Are you running on empty or on fumes? Has life run you so fast and so hard that you didn’t realize how depleted your tank was? Don’t panic! You were never meant to go through life alone or on empty. The fuel stations are all along your path and Jesus is always there to replenish your tank.
What is so wonderful is that the Holy Spirit doesn't operate on a specific schedule. He doesn't just come once a month or every other Tuesday. He is available every day whenever your tank needs to be refueled. The Holy Spirit is ready to give you such an outpouring of hope that it feels like a spring filling up a reservoir to the brim. And that outpouring of hope brings the joy, freedom and strength Jesus promised us.
Whatever trials or situations you find yourself in right now, know you are not alone. You can go to the refueling station and ask Jesus to fill up your empty tank. Ask for the Holy Spirit to recharge you so you can continue the journey Jesus has laid out for you. If you are running on fumes and you don’t know which way to turn, turn to Jesus. He is your hope and your strength. He has all you need to persevere. In the future, keep your tank full. Stop by His fueling station often, every day, and get it topped off with His goodness.
If you don’t know what this spiritual station looks like, here’s a tip. There’s a big bright sign filled with light on the road. You’ll see the words, “Holy Spirit.” The cost is nothing since Jesus already paid the price for you. Pull to the pump and choose from three grades of fuel: Peace! Be still! Abundant Love, and Radical Hope. If you are really running low, mix in a little of each. Then pray and meditate on the incomparable promises of hope Jesus left us. Fill up on His Word. Open your heart wide and let the Holy Spirit fill you up.
“And He who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:27-28
“And it will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all people; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.” Acts 2:17
Prayer
God of hope,
Fill me with all joy and peace as I trust in You, so that I may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. You will meet all my needs according to the riches of Your glory in Christ Jesus. You fill my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s! You satisfy the thirsty and fill the hungry with good things. You say that blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. I hunger and thirst for Your righteousness. Nothing else will satisfy my soul like You, Lord. I surrender to Your will and I will be obedient to Your instructions. Thank You for filling me up. Amen!

Neglecting the fuel gauge led to an unexpected crisis. My dad's advice about maintaining a full tank suddenly resonated as my car stalled near the red light. Desperation set in; the nearest refuge was distant gas station pumps. A valuable lesson: heed advice, for even when seemingly unnecessary, it can avert unforeseen predicaments.
