Finding Peace

We are entering our second week of Advent and our focus is on Peace. You know, in order to have peace, you have to be still. Being still can be a challenge, though, for many of us. Our culture rewards busyness and multitasking. The spinning plate syndrome receives accolades: the more plates you can spin, the more successful you are. But Jesus actually taught something very different, be still, peace be still.

How do you find peace in an upside down world that feels like it’s spinning out of control? Some days, it’s hard to know where to begin to find peace. When your world is filled with anxiety and fears, peace becomes harder to find. In fact, you may feel peace is actually hiding from you.

Believe it or not, Jesus knew exactly how that feels. After a long day of teaching the crowds, He fell asleep in the boat while crossing the water with His disciples. A storm came in with strong wind and waves and the disciples were so afraid. They woke Him up, rather annoyed that He was sleeping through all of this. Just like anyone who is awakened from a good sleep, Jesus wasn’t too happy. Where was the faith of the disciples? In frustration, He said, “Peace be still!”  In essence, He told the wind and the waves to “Hush!” or in our words today, “Shut up!”

Sometimes, in order to find peace, you have to be still and take control of your thoughts. Just as Jesus took authority and control over the storm, shut up your mind. Turn off the outside noise and get into the Presence of the Lord. That’s where you will find peace. He’s your hope and your peace too. It’s why Jesus said, “I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Be still and seek His face and His peace. He will give you rest from whatever storm you are in. Shout “Peace be still” at the storm. Jesus will shut up the wind and the waves that batter your thoughts. Bring your fears and anxious thoughts to Him and lay them at His feet. Let Him fill you with His peace to overflowing. Remember, our peace is not in this world. Our peace is within us when we have Jesus.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13

“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet My unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” Isaiah 54:10

Prayer

Lord,

You will keep those in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because they trust in You. I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. I will not let not my heart be troubled, neither will I let it be afraid; for You Yourself are my peace. Give me the courage and boldness to make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; for without holiness no one will see You. Help me turn from evil and do good; to seek peace and pursue it. Amen.
