Prince of Peace
When Jesus was born, the earth rejoiced! Hope had come to save us. He would be that bridge between the old covenant and the new covenant. He would be the link between the past and the present, between the present and the future. He would be the glue that would seal us and our relationship to the Lord. He would be the peace between God and sinners. The Prince of Peace!
This is the season when we celebrate who Jesus is. It isn’t about the Christmas tree with all its lights or the presents under the tree. It isn’t about the baked goodies and the secret Santas. While those are nice traditions, they can’t compete with the Prince of Peace. These traditions give us a moment of joy, but Jesus gives us everlasting love and life. A gift that has no comparison.
This gift arrived on a normal night, nothing special. There were no rooms of grandparents, cousins and friends anxiously waiting to hear the baby was born. Just exhausted parents with no room and just a manger. A Prince was born, but there were no angels hovering over the Savior’s place of birth. They were all celebrating with the shepherds who were in the fields.
Imagine! God chose shepherds, a lowly people looked down on by society, to give the good news of Jesus’s birth. Shepherds who were classified right along with tax collectors, prostitutes and “other sinners'' by the Pharisees. Outsiders. Not the people in the Temple. Jesus was born where people needed Him.
An angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord was shining all around them. They were terrified. But the angel told them not to be afraid because there was good news that would cause great joy for all people. A Messiah, a Savior, was born not far away wrapped in cloths lying in a manger. Say what?!! And then the angel was accompanied by a heavenly host praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests.” Luke 2:14
Just like the gift of peace was worshipped that night, we too should give all the glory to Jesus. Not because of what He has done, but for who He is. He is the Son of God and He deserves all the praise we can give Him. God spoke peace to all those on whom His favor rests. That's you and me. We should praise Him because He showed His glory to outsiders just like you and me. When Jesus was born, it was if the Lord was telling us how much He loves us and that we don’t have to be ashamed of who we are. This Prince of Peace sees the heart.
Perhaps you’re feeling not so special and you wonder if anyone truly cares. Rest assured that the Savior brings peace to your troubled soul. He came specifically for you. He loves outsiders. So lift your voice and sing, “Because of who You are, I give you glory. Because of who you are I give you praise. Because of who you are I will lift my voice and say, Lord I worship You because of who you are.” He’s the Prince of Peace.
“For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of HIs government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.” Isaiah 9:6-7
Prayer
Lord,
I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well. I will praise You, Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify Your name forever. You are my God; I will exalt You and praise Your name, for in perfect faithfulness You have done wonderful things, things planned long ago. I will give thanks to You, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all Your wonderful deeds. You are my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in You, and You help me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise You. Because Your love is better than life, my lips will glorify You. I will praise You as long as I live, and in Your name I will lift up my hands. Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy name! Amen!
